Importance of Pre-writing skills

The height and weight of preschoolers is meticulously tracked in order to monitor their physical development, but what about literacy development? Many do not recognize the critical impact that pre-writing skills have on children’s literacy development at later ages.

During the first year of life, most infants are working on fundamental movement skills such as head control, rolling, coming to sit, learning to crawl then cruising, and eventually walking. Their hands are evolving from a primarily fisted position to reaching towards objects and touching them then putting things in their mouths and transferring objects between hands. They are learning to grasp with all fingers together and by one they will be able to grasp with just a thumb and index finger. They can also throw a ball and other objects drop and pick up toys and feed themselves finger foods; and then comes the first stepping stone of your child’s life their preschool stage and with this, it brings the importance of writing skills.

These skills are the skills that kids need to master before they are ready to be able to write. It’s also known as writing readiness. Achieving mastery in these skills enables, kids to be able not just to write but also trace, draw figures, fills colors and imitates text. Schools start introducing pre-writing skills by starting with strokes like etc, this further helps them in the alphabet precision writing and imitating text as a skill usually comes by the age of 5 yrs.

Age Appropriate Expectations:

By 2 years the child should be able to make random horizontal, vertical and circular scribbles.

By 3 years the child should be able to copy horizontal, vertical, lines and circles.

By 4 years the child should be able to make a square and imitate complex alphabets and numbers.

By 5 years the child is ready to write and distinguish between small lines and curves.

Now, here listed below are few activities that can help to develop these skills:

1) Get Messy with Slime: It is a fun way to increase hand strength and dexterity that greatly influence your child’s motor skills to help them with activities such as grasping a pencil later on.

2) Paint the Picture: Holding a paintbrush is a little different than holding a regular pencil or crayon, so it will give your child an opportunity to strengthen muscles they might not be using regularly.

3) Games: Play games involving hand-eye co-ordination engage in pointing and poking games to make sure kids use just one figure to point and the whole hand.

4) Encourage your child to do activities involving grasps like opening and closing nut bolts, bottles, and threading. Let them get involved in day-to-day activities like peeling boiled eggs and potatoes.

5) Braiding: Teaching your child to braid can help them shift their focus to performing a specific and intricate task with their little hands which may greatly enhance pre-writing skills; it is also a useful way to sharpen hand-eye coordination, which is one of the vital skills for preschoolers.

There is an overwhelming amount of pressure for parents to educate their children and entertain them as well, so any time there’s a chance to do both, please jump on it.

Just remember that the most important part of encouraging your child’s writing is helping them develop their motor skills. The rest will fall into place.
