How to lovingly discipline our children?

Lovingly Discipline is an approach to help children develop healthy self-discipline and grow into their full potential in life.

One day I walked into a mall with my family. While we were there, window shopping of course, we saw a child on the floor, crying and yelling. He wanted something and his parents could not convince him that his demands cannot be met with…for whatever reasons. The child was all over. The parents looked helpless and embarrassed. Well! Everyone was staring at them.

At this point, I looked at my son and very politely but in a very firm voice told him that anytime in life he decides to behave the way the child did, both his dad and I would not be happy. No yelling, no shouting, no hitting nothing… He understood that I meant every word I said.

Discipline is an important and a very effective tool. But you need to use it in a way that keeps your child’s dignity intact. It is simply teaching your child which behaviors are OK and which are not.

With the right methods, discipline can be a very positive and loving experience. Here are few tips to help you discipline your child with love:

“Practice what you preach”, Children observe and copy their parents. How you talk- are you rude or respectful, your habits- do you pick up after you are done eating or drinking, what your wear, what you buy, etc. Most importantly they observe how you are in your daily life. As parents, you must be disciplined, that is what your little ones will learn. You yourselves must set a good example.

Let your child know that it is better to be honest and tell the truth rather than getting into any trouble.

Listen to your child, give him/her the space to tell you their side of the story. Acknowledge their feelings. Observe the changes in your child’s behavior and talk to them about it. Appreciate them for being good.

When your child makes a demand, talk to him/her regarding the requirement of the demand. Your child should be able to understand whether his/her demand is a necessity or not.

Children need a wide variety of experiences to grow up whole, healthy and capable of making their way in this increasingly complex and competitive world. As parents you must focus on the long-term development of self- discipline rather than a short-term result. If you simply go for approaches that get immediate short-term results, you will be setting yourself up for lifetime of parenting.
