How to inculcate values in kids in the current pandemic situation

Simple values showcase major differences when it comes to building a child’s personality. Especially when difficult times hit everyone around, kids are the only ones left out to cope with their surroundings. The covid-19 hit everyone, kids, adults, the older generation, everybody, and the consequences were also to be suffered by everyone including kids. The stop to outdoor games, and meeting their friends was hard to explain to kids when they couldn’t understand and see how bad the situation was beyond the doors of their houses.

The whole pandemic situation led to locking indoors and continuing life from the comfort of homes. While the adults managed to cope up with the situation, the kids had to suffer a little extra in order to sit back at home and do nothing. Sooner or later the education system went online and that’s how it became important for parents to start with inculcating different values at home which kids were going to learn and develop at school. The values are the base foundation of building a kid’s thought process and personality, meanwhile, the values do not limit to being taught only at school. Inculcating moral values at an early age in a kid’s life brings balance and discipline and also helps the kid to make the right choices in life.

In fact, the pandemic brought along an opportunity itself for parents to start the process of developing basic and moral values for their kids at home. The basic family values are usually not enough for a child to survive in a thriving world, especially when a time of crisis arrives at their feet without any warning and they have to deal with it. The values that parents and teachers are willing to inculcate into a kid’s mindset, is going to differ, person-by-person. The crisis is the times when you can teach children the use and explanation of the values with real-life instances for a better impact. One of the leading schools, Lexicon, has come up with some values that can be started inculcating at home:

  • Gratitude – One thing pandemic has enforced onto everyone is feeling grateful for whatever number of resources they have. Kids are innocent minds and they need to understand the feeling of being grateful and thankful for whatever they have. Food, shelter, education, clothes, and health are the new five necessities that are required by a human being to survive. Parents can ask their children to start saying a prayer before a meal and practicing gratitude on a daily basis. In such times of pandemic, kids were being protected most because of the deadly virus, and parents had to help kids understand why playing with current toys, having self-time, or reading new stories was more important than going out to create bonds. The social interaction was minimized to zero, here parents can make it possible for their kids to be grateful for the virtual availability, to keep their friendships and bonds intact. Make a habit of thanking the healthcare workers and police officials in the times of pandemic who are fighting battles on the open front, to make kids understand the importance they hold. Little things are going to teach children bigger lessons.
  • Persistence and strength – There are going to be times when kids would feel trapped, stuck, and frustrated about things they can’t control. Parents can help their kids to streamline their focus and determination into things that they have control on, for example, identifying emotions and acting upon coping up with these emotions to keep a steady mind. Kids often are unable to differentiate between different kinds of feelings they experience, here parents can practice a few activities such as group meditation, and having a day in a week for conversations about what their kid is feeling. Strength is of utmost need when it comes down to surviving through any or every kind of crisis, be it a pandemic or in general life. Mental, as well as physical strength, is required when it comes to dealing with the times of the covid-19 pandemic. Parents can start a daily routine of exercising together with their kids and talking to their kids out of the stressful environment around them, which will help the kid to build mental and physical strength to fight against the difficult times.
  • Peculiarity – When the lockdowns were imposed, parents and kids were locked inside of their homes with nothing in their hands to do or take interest in. Going out, taking classes that interest your kids, or even meeting their friends had a stop to it. To remove this boredom, parents can find out ways to understand their kids and figure out what peculiar things their kids are intrigued by. It can be painting, singing, dancing, or literature that a kid can take up during the times of lockdown. A pandemic can be turned into an opportunity to understand what kids are willing to pursue in their near future, wherein their hobbies can be turned into activities to pass time. Supporting children in such times in helping them find their interests will ultimately build a bond between parents and their kids. Help kids in researching their interests and different ways to pursue those interests.
  • Resolution – There are going to be obstacles in adjusting to the new form of life, which is all-world in one place. Social distancing reduced human interaction outside of the house, which limited children to develop a value of resolution to conflicts and obstacles. Patience is a key feature when it comes down to fighting fears or obstacles and teaching kids to have patience can be more difficult than it seems. The opportunity to sculpt children and help them understand that they will need patience in order to move ahead in life and achieve their goals. Patience will help them to think rationally and have a clear head when they have to make a decision. Coming up with solutions is a way of tackling the obstacles. Make it a habit to ask kids to have different perspectives and approaches to a problem and find out different solutions to the problems. There is going to be a time when kids will have to make difficult choices in order to come down to choosing to do the correct thing, and here patience and perspective will play an important role and go hand-in-hand. Teaching kids to have patience and perspective will build their personality slowly and steadily.
  • Sharing is caring – This value does not necessarily to be inculcated only when in school. One of the most important factors for children to develop empathy is to care for others, people other than their family. Empathy helps children to build emotional relationships with other people which are required in living a healthy lifestyle. Sharing resources, for example, toys, clothes, and food with your parents, friends, or underprivileged kids, is a trait that parents should start harvesting into kids from the very beginning. The pandemic created a crisis that led to people being unable to help each other even if they wanted to. Kids are naïve and they should be willing to help their friends and family by their own choice, and for this to happen, parents should ask children to share their food with them and share their toys with each other. As social distancing is a part of the current crisis, sharing good and positive thoughts can affect teaching kids the trait of having caring nature.

The crisis of covid-19 is going to go on for a while, nonetheless supporting children is of utmost importance. Values are going to be the strongest base on how kids are going to turn out in the future and parents as well as teachers play an important role in harvesting such values. Other than the above-mentioned values, the lexicon school, one of the leading schools, suggests that pandemics are the times to teach right and wrong, love and compassion, and most importantly kindness to children. These values are going to come into play unknowingly and are going to affect how kids are going to turn out as human beings. Parents and teachers must use small instances to habituate big lessons into kids.
